Grad programs rank among best in the nation

The Ohio State University College of Engineering’s graduate program is ranked first in Ohio and 17th among all public universities in U.S. News & World Report’s 2021 Best Graduate Schools issue.

Several departments within the college also placed among the very best programs in the nation. The Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering retained its rank as 9th among its peers within American universities. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering ranked 12th overall, up two spots since last year.

Other top 25 engineering programs at Ohio State include industrial/manufacturing engineering (16), nuclear engineering (16), aerospace engineering (18), electrical engineering (22) and computer engineering (23). In moving up eight spots, electrical engineering experienced the biggest improvement. Just outside the top 25, civil engineering also improved its ranking significantly, rising from 32nd to 27th.

For the U.S. News rankings of graduate programs, 214 engineering schools that grant doctoral degrees were surveyed. While overall engineering graduate school rankings are derived from a combination of 10 quantitative and qualitative indicators, the publication’s engineering specialty rankings are based solely on peer assessments by department heads in each area. Assessment surveys and statistical data were collected in fall 2019 and early 2020.

In the 2018-19 academic year, Ohio State’s College of Engineering awarded 633 graduate degrees.

In January, Ohio State was ranked 19th in the U.S. News & World Report Best Online Graduate Engineering Programs rankings. In the publication's 2020 Best Colleges issue, more departments (10) within The Ohio State University College of Engineering placed among the nation’s top programs than ever before. Overall, Ohio State’s undergraduate engineering program again ranked first in Ohio, and 16th among public universities nationwide.
