Tenure-Track Faculty Position: Visual Analytics and the Design of Cognitive Tools

Posted:

The Department of Integrated Systems (ISE) at The Ohio State University, one of the nation’s top ten public universities, invites applications for a tenure-track position focusing on visual analytics and sensemaking, human-computer interaction, data mining and the design of cognitive tools to support data analytics. All faculty ranks will be considered. ISE offers degrees (BS, MS and Ph.D.) in Industrial and Systems Engineering and its undergraduate and graduate programs are consistently among the top programs ranked by USNWR, as the Department has exceptional strength in all major areas associated with the discipline. The Department also has an excellent track record for industry engagement and technology transfer.

The position is partially funded by Ohio State’s Discovery Themes Initiative, a significant faculty hiring investment in key thematic areas in which the university can build on its culture of academic collaboration to make a global impact. It is part of a university-wide initiative in Data Analytics, with ISE playing a leading role focusing on visual analytics and sensemaking. The position builds upon the department’s long history of international leadership in cognitive systems engineering, visualization and representation design, and the development of interactive cognitive tools that support data exploration, pattern detection and sensemaking.

The successful applicant will be expected to excel at creating and participating in interdisciplinary research teams on problems in analytics with partners within OSU, while building upon the long history that the department has with successful collaborations which address data overload and distributed cognitive work in a number of different data-rich systems, including: aviation, cyber security, electric power, finance, military operations, intelligence analysis, and healthcare. This person will establish a strong research program, attract research funding from federal, state and industry sources, supervise graduate student research, and disseminate the results of such research through high quality peer-reviewed publications. Additionally, they will extend current course offerings in visual analytics, cognitive systems engineering and human systems integration at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, to help students design interactive cognitive tools that support data exploration, pattern recognition, visual communication and sensemaking.

Interested candidates should electronically submit a complete curriculum vitae, a separate statement of current and future research interests, a statement of teaching philosophy, and contact information for five references, to the following email address: freitas.6@osu.edu. The search committee will start reviewing applications for this position on October 1, 2015 and will remain open until filled.
