ISE 5520-5525 - Industrial Automation & Industrial Robotics

Systems Automation01

The competitive nature of the manufacturing industry has caused them to strongly embrace Automation and Robotics.  They span broadly from textiles, clothing, glass, ceramics,  and even food and beverages.  New trends in manufacturing systems have been using automation systems at every stage from material handling, machining, assembling, inspection, and packaging. With the network based control and industrial robotic systems, manufacturing automation becomes very flexible and efficient.

Industry 4.0, the internet of things, and emerging technology have created great opportunities in this area for Industry. The companies that are able to incorporate and develop these emerging technologies now will be the leaders of tomorrow.

Industrial Automation is the use of various mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, electronic, and computer controls and devices in work environments (e.g., quality control and material handling) for the purposes of reducing labor cost and error (particularly in repetitive or hazardous working conditions).  In the ISE lab the particular focus is on Fanuc Robotics and general automation incorporating Programmable Logic Controllers, sensors, and other basic items for material handling.

Omron Automation and Voelker Control Company, built and donated PLC trainer systems and software for student to learn about automation control system. Our students will learn how set up simple PLC programming and how to connect the inputs (buttons, sensors, etc.) to outputs (lights, motors, etc.). Their generous and continuing support makes it possible to teach ISE5520 to current Industry standard at ISE department.
