This seminar will start with an introduction of the electric utility industry and successful stories of leveraging operations research techniques to benefit the industry. Then, the focus will be given on a developed methodology to identify the best locations and capacities of battery energy storage systems (BESS) installed in radial distribution networks. Such batteries are mainly intended for improving the reliability of the distribution network. The  methodology uses utility historical load, outage and project cost data, and relies on a mixed-integer linear programming optimization tool. The power and energy capacities of any of the BESS considered can be determined either optimally or heuristically. Multiple case studies including the ones based on real-world distribution networks will be presented, whose outcomes show the validity and efficacy of the proposed methodology.

Xuan Wu received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, in 2018. Currently, he is a Principal Engineer at American Electric Power (AEP) and has been working about 8 years in this industry. His research/working interests include power system operation, planning, security & resilience, transmission engineering and equipment. He has authored/coauthored over 30 journal and conference papers on those areas. Xuan received 2 AEP Key Contributor Awards, an Outstanding Engineer Award from IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) Columbus Chapter, and 2 Best Paper Awards from IEEE Transactions on Power Systems. He is currently an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery and an Editorial Board Member of International Transactions on Electrical Energy Systems. Xuan is the Representative of IEEE PES Region 2, Chairs/Vice Chairs of various IEEE working groups, an IEEE Senior Member, and a Registered Professional Engineer licensed in Ohio.
