Summary: It is now well accepted that low back and neck pain arise from complex interactions among physical, social, and psychological factors. One factor that has yet to be investigated relative to low back and neck injury is the psychological phenomenon of cognitive dissonance. Dissonance is experienced when an individual must reconcile two or more psychologically inconsistent notions (thoughts, beliefs, or behaviors). While dissonance has previously been shown to increase arousal and negative affect, it may also have downstream biomechanical implications including increased muscle coactivity, increased muscle fatigue, and ultimately, an increased risk for low back or neck pain. This study aims to test the physiological and biomechanical effects of cognitive dissonance in a laboratory setting. Subjects will perform a precision lowering task in the laboratory, and cognitive dissonance will be established by providing subjects with feedback that runs counter to their own assessment of their performance on the task.
