Admission to the ISE Major

Admission to the ISE Major

ISE major application

Apply to the major

Admission to the Industrial and Systems Engineering degree program is by application only and is highly competitive based on a student’s academic performance in foundation courses and a personal statement. To review the admission criteria standards for current students, in accordance with the College of Engineering Enrollment Management Plan approved by the University Council on Academic Affairs, please review the document below:

ISE Eligibility Requirements

Students must successfully complete the following pre-major courses (or their equivalents) before they are eligible to apply to the major:

  • Engineering 1181
  • Engineering 1182
  • Mathematics 1151
  • Mathematics 1172
  • Physics 1250
  • Physics 1251
  • English 1110.0x
  • University Survey (minimum one credit hour)

Students must successfully complete or be in-progress of completing the following pre-major courses (or their equivalents) during the semester in which they are applying to the major:

  • Computer Science & Engineering 1223
  • Mathematics 2568
  • Statistics 3470

Students are required to earn a grade of C or better in the following pre-major courses. If a student does not meet this requirement, they will not be admitted to the ISE major. Students have the option to repeat a course, but should consult with their Academic Advisor before doing so. Students who are currently enrolled in a pre-major course that requires a minimum C grade will have their academic record reviewed at the end of the semester in which they are applying to the major to confirm the minimum grade has been earned.

  • Computer Science & Engineering 1223
  • Mathematics 2568
  • Statistics 3470
  • English 1110.0x

Submitting an Application

The Department of Integrated Systems Engineering accepts applications to the major in the autumn and spring semesters only. A student becomes eligible to apply to the ISE major at the beginning of the semester in which that student will complete or be in-progress with the required pre-major courses.

If you are unsure if you have the requirements needed to apply to the ISE major, please schedule an appointment with an Academic Advisor.

Application Deadlines

Students must complete the online ISE Major Application no later than the third Friday of the semester in which they are eligible to apply.

For admission to the major starting:

Autumn semester

Spring semester

Submit application by 11:59pm on:

3rd Friday of prev. Spring semester

3rd Friday of prev. Autumn semester

Application Materials

Students must submit a one-page personal statement in response to the following prompt: “Please describe why you want to be an Industrial and Systems Engineer. Highlight any special circumstances that might have affected your academic performance.”

EPHR and CPHR Calculations

Admission to the Industrial and Systems Engineering degree program is highly competitive based on a student’s CPHR, EPHR, and personal statement.

  • CPHR (Cumulative Point Hour Ratio) – average of grades in all courses taken at OSU only.
  • EPHR (Eligibility Point Hour Ratio) – average of grade in designated ISE pre-major courses

The Department of Integrated Systems Engineering calculates a student’s EPHR using the following pre-major courses (or their equivalents):

  • Engineering 1181
  • Mathematics 1151
  • Mathematics 1172
  • Physics 1250
  • Physics 1251
  • English 1110.0x
  • Computer Science & Engineering 1223

Additional rules regarding the EPHR calculation

  • If a student completes pre-major courses at another institution, these transfer grades will be used to calculate the EPHR.
  • If a student repeats a pre-major course at OSU under the grade forgiveness rule, the second grade earned will be used to calculate the EPHR.
  • If a student repeats a pre-major course at OSU without the grade forgiveness rule or repeats a pre-major course at another institution, both grades will be used (average) to calculate the EPHR.

Admission Decisions

For guaranteed admission, a student must have both:

  • CPHR 3.00 or greater
  • EPHR 3.30 or greater

All students are highly encouraged to apply as majority of students admitted to the ISE major do not meet the guaranteed admission criteria.

Students will be notified of official acceptance into the major via their OSU email account.

Students will be permitted to register for ISE major courses for the following semester as long as they meet all other prerequisites. Students who do not meet the academic standards to be admitted into the major at the end of the semester in which they are applying will be removed from these courses at that time.
