Graduate Teaching Associates (GTA)

GTA appointments in the Department of Integrated Systems Engineering are highly sought after and competitive. Applications for GTA appointments cannot be considered before admission to the ISE Graduate Program.

In general, the Department considers two issues when making GTA appointments.  One is academic promise as a student, which is judged on the basis of the materials submitted for admission to the program and grades received while in the ISE graduate program.  The other is appropriate background and skills for the duties required by the particular assignment.

There are no guarantees of appointment beyond that specified in the student’s initial appointment documents.  Re-appointments are dependent upon availability of funds, satisfactory performance and successful academic progress.


GTAs assist in all components of the course and attend all course sessions; hold office hours for students; work directly with students; assist faculty members with course and lab materials, assignments, and exams; ensure a safe and effective laboratory environment; grade homework, lab reports, and exams; participate in ongoing efforts to improve the program; other course related duties as assigned by the faculty member.

To be successful, it is essential that a GTA be proficient in all course material and to prepare for labs by working through the student assignments.


GTAs are required to have strong written and verbal communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; acceptance into the ISE Graduate Program and a strong desire to teach.

Spoken English Requirement.  GTAs whose native language is not English, and who did not score a TOEFL iBT speaking component score of 28 or higher, must pass the University’s Oral Proficiency Assessment (OPA) in order to hold a GTA position.  Students should schedule this examination as soon as possible after arriving on campus.  For more information see Spoken English Program.

GTA Training Course. New GTAs are required to attend a GTA teaching development workshop offered by the University Center for the Advancement of Teaching. and the ISE GTA training and orientation.  These will occur the week before Autumn semester classes begin.  The Department will coordinate and schedule the workshop for new GTA’s.  If offered a GTA position, you will be expected to adjust any summer internships accordingly in order to attend this required training.

Working Hours and Compensation:

Standard 50% appointment = 20 hours per week


  • Tuition waiver (i.e. 100% waiver including instructional, general and learning technology fees) if enrollment requirements for Graduate Associate & Fellow appointments have been met.
  • Monthly stipend (i.e. base stipend is $2364 per month)
  • 85% Student Health Insurance subsidy

The following fees are not covered by the tuition waiver and will be deducted from the monthly stipend: Student Activity Fee, Student Union Fee, COTA Bus Fee, Recreation Fee, and the unsubsidized portion of Student Health Insurance (if applicable).  See  for a complete listing of graduate fee tables.

Visiting Scholars

ISE welcomes visiting scholars who are pursuing research or other activities in the field of integrated systems engineering.  The following information is for an ISE faculty member wanting to sponsor a visiting scholar.

A visiting scholar at The Ohio State University is a visitor from another academic institution (domestic or international), or a non-academic visitor who has need for University identification while at Ohio State.  All visiting scholar appointments at Ohio State are non-faculty appointments.

The sponsoring faculty member is responsible for assuring a good educational experience, encouraging cultural exchange, and appropriately representing the University and our country.  Visiting scholars are hosted for varying lengths of time not to exceed five years (appointed annually with the option to extend) and are encouraged to become involved in a variety of activities within the Department.  We particularly encourage applications from visiting scholars who have directly, or through their home institutions, collaborated with our faculty and/or staff.

Prior to committing to the prospective visiting scholar, the first step is to contact the department chair to discuss hosting the visiting scholar.  The request must include the following information:

  1. A statement of interest, including the proposed activities, the significance of these activities, and how they will benefit the visiting scholar and the department. Any past collaborations should also be noted.
  2. The exact proposed date of arrival and departure. Requests should be submitted a minimum of 3 months prior to the proposed arrival date.
  3. A copy of curriculum vitae

Upon receipt of approval from the department chair, the faculty host should submit the J-1 Scholar Request Form and the J-1 Visa English Verification form to Tammy Freitas, Human Resource Generalist.  The J-1 Visa English Verification form requires a handwritten signature.

Once all of the materials have been received, a letter of invitation will be issued to the visiting scholar candidate with instructions on completing the visa process.

Note that the visiting scholar’s invitation is dependent on the successful completion of a background check and other certifications as required by Ohio State.
