The Creation of the Industrial,
Welding and Systems
Engineering Department

Primary Author: CM Sommerich/2006

The 90's and the New Century: More Change, Growth, and Diversity

In 1994, the ISE department was merged with the Welding Engineering department and OSU's Department of Industrial, Welding and Systems Engineering was formed. The late 90's saw the additions of Shahrukh Irani (lean and advanced manufacturing methods and systems), Ted Allen (experimental design), Blaine Lilly (manufacturing and design), and Jose Castro (manufacturing and chemical processes). The Welding Engineering program moved into new facilities in the Edison Welding Technology Center on OSU's West Campus.

Development in the IWSE department at the beginning of the 21st Century included the addition of online courses offered by the Welding Engineering program. In 2003, a fully online MS in Welding Engineering was approved. Personnel changes included the departure of Nadine Sarter, who had joined the department in 1999, but left in 2004 to start a program in cognitive engineering at U of M, the addition of Steve Lavender and Carolyn Sommerich, both in the physical ergonomics area, and the addition of Allen Yi (precision engineering and micromachining). Dr. Yi was awarded a prestigious NSF Career Award in 2006. Important additions to the OR area in 2006 included Suvrajeet Sen and Julia Higle. Dr. Higle joined the department as its first female Chair and the first external person to be hired as a Chair of the department.

What's next for the IWSE department? A new name. In April 2009, we became the Department of Integrated Systems Engineering. Read more...
